Thanks For Hanging Out

Recently after hanging out with a friend they turned to me and said “thanks for hanging out.” Which is a seemingly harmless statement, which, for some reason, provoked a firework display of thoughts in my brain. The main thing it reminded me of was of myself a year ago when I said that very same phrase to a friend. Her response was quite enlightening: “Sujit, you know you shouldn’t have to thank me each time we hang out, I hang out with you because I want to not because I have to.”

I could just over thinking this comment, but after this response I have stopped thanking people for hanging out with me. Yet, should we thank people for hanging out? They are taking their time, energy and often resources to invest time in our lives. Is this “thank you” just an implied non-verbal thing that we never say but we should assume people are saying to us? Shouldn’t we show gratitude for the people we have in your lives?

I may just be bias as I think that we have become an over grateful society. Apologizes and thanks run so rapid they seem to mean nothing. I am thankful for each and everyone of my friends if I say it or not. The key is finding the balance between fake and genuine .

While there are dozens of online services and software tools out there that help you download videos from YouTube for offline watching, you don’t need their help anymore for downloading your own videos from YouTube.

That’s because Google now allows all video publishers to export their own video clips out of YouTube in MPEG-4 (MP4) format – you can directly play these downloaded in iPod or other video players without conversion.

Poem: My Story Will Still Be Told

This poem doesn’t rhyme
This song is out of tune
And this story won’t ever be published

Sometimes it doesn’t need to rhyme to be said
Sometimes it doesn’t need to be on tune to be heard
And sometimes it doesn’t need to be published to be true

Maybe it doesn’t need to rhyme
Maybe it doesn’t need to be in harmony
And maybe it doesn’t need to be punctuated perfectly

Say the words as they are meant to be spoken
Listen to the music as it is
And read the words as they are written

My poem will still be written
My song will still be sung
And my story will still be told

airtelpcDo you have an old computer monitor that’s gathering dust someone in the corner of your house? Or do you have plans to buy a new PC for performing only basic computing tasks like writing documents, email, chatting, browsing websites, etc.

If you said yes to any of the above questions, read this.

Bharti Airtel, the largest mobile operator here, has just launched a new device called Net PC, which as the name suggests, is a low cost computer designed specifically for cloud computing. The device is powered by Windows XP (not Linux as you would expect) and costs INR 5,000 (or $100) in India.

To get started, you just have to plug in the USB modem or the broadband Ethernet cable into the Net PC and you’re ready to go. The device weighs a mere 500 grams and is small enough (11.5cm x 11.5cm x 3.5cm) to fit in one of your trouser pockets.

Thank You Door

8217037-mdAs I was walking through a mall today (07/06/09),  I saw and heard something that took me by surprise. Maybe this was something that shouldn’t have taken me by surprise. Perhaps I’m just over reacting. Then again, maybe I’m right.

Of course, now you’re probably thinking to yourself “what did he see?” Well I saw a young girl (probably 4-6) walking through and entering the automatic sliding door as I was exiting and as the door opened she said “thank you door.” I smiled and sort of laughed at this looking at the gentleman she was with who simply gave me a slight smile like I was crazy and we all went on our ways.

If you are like me you like to take things for granted, we live in a society where everything is fast, fast food, fast news, and fast communication. I often forget to “slow down and smell the roses.” It’s funny how often time it’s the children that we turn to when we need to be reminded of life’s little lessons.

How are You?

how-are-youIn our society, especially among the younger generation,  it is very common to be greeted with a “how are you?” This has to be one of my biggest startup points. I think it has to do with the fact that 95.7% of the time when people ask me how I am, all they are doing is just asking… hoping I’ll respond with a “I’m good, thanks”. I can’t help to think to myself though…. why do we say we are good, fine, great, or ekdum mast, rapchik, bas chal raha hai. Instead why don’t we tell the truth. Now, maybe the truth is you are fine but i suppose maybe it’s my want for more information that makes me wonder WHY are you fine, WHAT makes you good. What i always wonder is that y dont people answer to that question honestly… and in another dimension, why I am unable to answer that question honestly? And for this very reason, i have decided not to use this phrase frequently. Wait… not just frequently, I am taking an oath not to use this phrase anymore to anyone or with anyone.

So How are you?

On Twitter, Most People Are Sheep: 80 Percent Of Accounts Have Fewer Than 10 Followers

sheep-faceLet’s face it, most people are sheep. It is much easier to follow than to lead, and on Twitter it is no different. A full 80 percent of Twitter accounts have fewer than 10 followers, according to an analysis of seven million Twitter accounts provided to TechCrunch by Web security firm Purewire (which operates TweetGrade). What’s more, 30 percent have zero followers.

Does this mean nobody is using Twitter? Or that they are using it more as a one-way information consumption service?

The fact that an estimated 32 million people around the world visited Twitter.com alone in April certainly indicates that there is something going on there. It just may be that Twitter really isn’t as much about two-way micro-conversations as it is about one-way micro-broadcasting. Indeed, a recent Harvard Business School study suggested that the top 10 percent of Twitter users produce more than 90 percent of all Tweets.

Here is how Purewire breaks down activity on Twitter by number of followers, followings, and Tweets:

7 Good Reasons To Cry Your Eyes Out

cryingNew York Times reporter Benedict Carey referred to tears in a recent piece as “emotional perspiration.” Given that I sweat a lot and hate deodorant, I suppose it makes sense that I weep often. But I’m not going to apologize for that, because after a good cry, I always feel cleansed, like my heart and mind just rubbed each other’s backs in a warm bath.

In his article, “The Miracle of Tears” , from which I’ve lifted some of the research for this post, author Jerry Bergman writes: “Tears are just one of many miracles which work so well that we taken them for granted every day.” Here, then, are seven ways tears and the phenomenon we call “crying” heal us physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually.

1. Tears help us see.

Starting with the most basic function of tears, they enable us to see. Literally. Tears not only lubricate our eyeballs and eyelids, they also prevent dehydration of our various mucous membranes. No lubrication, no eyesight. Writes Bergman: “Without tears, life would be drastically different for humans–in the short run enormously uncomfortable, and in the long run eyesight would be blocked out altogether.”
